SUMMARY: This is skilled firefighting work in combating, extinguishing, and preventing fires, and in the operation and routine custodial maintenance of departmental equipment, apparatus, and quarters.
An employee of this class is responsible for the protection of life and property through firefighting, rescue, and related duties. Duties include training and participation in the operation of firefighting apparatus and the performance of hazardous duties under emergency conditions. Work may require strenuous exertion under such handicaps as smoke, fire, heat, and cramped surroundings. When not engaged in firefighting or rescue activities, incumbents are required to participate in drill and study programs and to perform routine duties in the care and maintenance of station equipment, apparatus, buildings, and grounds. Work is normally performed under close supervision in accordance with established policies and procedures. Assignments are given by a superior officer both in fighting fires and at the station. Work is usually reviewed for adherence to standards and through observation of accomplishment and reports on desired results.

EXAMPLES OF WORK
Examples of work performed in this classification include, but are not limited to, the following tasks. These tasks may be amended or other tasks may be assigned as necessary.
Essential Function: Fire Suppression Service Delivery
- Responds to fire calls with a company; lays and connects hose; holds nozzles and directs water streams; climbs ladders; uses chemical fire extinguishers, bars, hooks, lines, and other equipment as assigned, according to standard operating guidelines.
- Ventilates burning buildings by opening windows and skylights or by cutting holes in roofs and floors as assigned with all safety precautions observed.
- Performs salvage operations such as removing water, and debris, covering property with tarps, and removing property from buildings as assigned, observing safety precautions.
Essential Function: Rescue
- Removes persons from danger, acting alone or as a member of a team.Operates extrication equipment.
- Operates various power and hand tools.
- Deploys rope rescue equipment.
- Participates in search and rescue operations.
Essential Function: Emergency Medical
- Responds to medical emergencies, makes patient assessments and delivers care to Basic Emergency Medical Technician level.
- Maintains inventory of medical supplies.
Essential Function: Apparatus Operation
- Drives rescue apparatus to medical calls when assigned, following standard operating procedures.
- Drives and operates pumping apparatus when assigned, using standard operating procedures.
- Drives and operates aerial apparatus when assigned, using standard operating procedures.
Essential Function: Fire Prevention
- Conducts fire and life safety presentations when assigned, using nationally recognized programs.
- Conducts and participates in fire station tours to educate public in fire safety and fire service operations.
Essential Function: Fire, Rescue, and Emergency Medical Training
- Attends fire, rescue and emergency medical training sessions as they are scheduled for in-service training.
- Conducts fire, rescue, and emergency medical classes as assigned for in-service training.
- Maintains National and State EMT certification as required for employment, by attending refresher courses, obtaining required continuing education hours, paying all fees associated with re-certification, completing and mailing re-certification application forms.
- Attends national and state certified fire and rescue classes as scheduled to enhance individual ability in emergency service discipline.
Essential Function: Emergency Contingency Planning
- Participates in emergency contingency planning as assigned, including building walk-through, table top scenarios.
- Maintains current knowledge of streets and city infrastructure measured by test instrument as required.
Essential Function: Maintenance and Custodial Duties
- Performs daily, weekly, monthly, periodic and annual maintenance on emergency apparatus as assigned, according to standard operating guidelines.
- Performs daily, weekly, monthly, periodic and annual custodial duties and maintenance assigned to fire stations and grounds, according to standard operating guidelines.
- Participates in periodic maintenance and annual testing of fire hose, ladders, and various emergency equipment as assigned according to standard operating guidelines.
Essential Function: Wellness / Fitness
- Participates in the physical fitness-training program as required to ensure physical ability to perform duties.
- Successfully completes semi-annual fitness test as required for employment.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent (GED), and three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in fire suppression.
OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS AND RESTRICTIONS
- Three (3) years experience as "Firefighter" with the Ridgeland Fire Department.
- Basic fire fighters course to meet state requirements.
- Emergency Medical Technician course with National and State Certifcation.
