Alderman Gerald Steen,
Alderman-at-Large and Mayor Pro Tempore
When the opportunity to run for Alderman arose, I decided that I wanted to take my service to the citizens of Ridgeland to another level. By 1997, I had served on the City’s Zoning Board for seven years. I began my first term as Alderman-at-Large after winning a special election in October 1997.
What I enjoy the most about the job is communicating with the citizens of Ridgeland, including individuals and members of homeowners’ associations, and representing them. I do this by attending homeowners’ association meetings and staying in touch via telephone and e-mail. I enjoy being a voice on the Board for the neighborhoods, keeping the citizens informed, and providing a helping hand when there is a problem. One of my strengths is bringing developers and homeowners together to reach compromise.
As a Region Leader with Sprint Mart, I am responsible for 22 stores, two of which are located in Ridgeland. Sprint Mart is a family-owned company of convenience stores selling Shell and Exxon gasoline. The company emphasizes to its employees that they offer each customer a greeting, a smile, and an expression of appreciation for their business.
Raised in Attala County, I moved to Ridgeland in 1984. My family consists of my wife, Linda, and four children.
Our youngest child, Amber, lives at home and attends Ridgeland High School.
I stay involved in community life a number of ways. I am an active member of the Ridgeland High School Booster Club, Gideon’s International, and First Baptist Church of Ridgeland. I enjoy teaching Sunday school classes. As a member of Gideon’s International, I help distribute Bibles to 5th graders in Ridgeland and to hospitals and hotels.
