Solid Waste

Solid Waste for the City of Ridgeland is handled by Waste Management of MS. Please review the frequently asked questions regarding solid waste removal prior to contacting the Public Works Department.  Information regarding recycling is below the following questions.

How do I prepare my garbage for collection?
All waste must be placed in containers or bags no greater than 35 gallons in capacity. Containers or bags cannot weigh more than 60 lbs. All waste must be out by 7:00 am and placed within 5 feet of the curb in front of the residential unit being serviced.

How do I prepare my yard waste for collection?
All yard waste must be in bags, containers, or bundles. Tree trimmings and branches must be cut into lengths of no longer than 5 feet and be no more than 8 inches in diameter and weigh no more than 60 lbs. Properly prepared yard waste should be placed at the curb with your regular garbage and will be picked up by the second collection day.

What holidays will be observed?
New Years Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. If your collection day falls on one of these holidays your waste collection will occur on your next scheduled day. Waste Management will publicize changes in the collection schedule due to the observance of the above holidays.

Does Waste Management collect hazardous waste such as motor oil, gasoline, paint and paint cans?
No, Waste Management does not collect hazardous waste, but they will collect paint cans which have the lid removed and contents are dry. You may take your hazardous waste to the Jackson Environmental Service Center at 1708 Terry Road (Hwy 80 and Terry Road).  Hours of operation are Tuesday and Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and on the 4th Saturday of the month from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.  Phone number is 601-960-1193.  They accept the following:  used motor oil, used oil filters, car batteries, antifreeze, brake fluid, transmission fluid, primers/sealers, fertilizers, pesticides, insecticides, fungicides, herbicides, household cleaners, gasoline, paint/stains, thinners, solvents, degreasers, pool chemicals, photographic chemicals, and 5 gallon propane tanks.

How do I dispose of household furniture or appliances (other than those containing freon)?
These items will be collected along with your yard waste by the second collection day.

How do I dispose of items containing Freon (refrigerators, freezers, air conditioner units, etc)?
The Freon and/or refrigeration systems must be removed by a certified technician and tagged showing proper removal and handling of material. Once this has been completed the units will be collected along with your yard waste by the second collection day. Recycling

Curbside Recycling Collection is provided by Red River Service Corporation under a contract beginning on December 1, 2006.  Please set out all recyclables by 7:00 a.m. on your designated collection day.  Please view the Recycling Map to determine your collection day.  For information about recyling including what items are collected and how to prepare them for recycling, please view the informational Recycling Flyer.  For questions about the recycling collection service, please call the Red River Service office at 1-866-720-7772. 

There will be no recycling collection on the following holidays:  Christmas, New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Thanksgiving.  If your collection day falls on one of these holidays, your recycling will be collected on your regular pick up day the following week.
